LONDON · THREE DIFFERENT RECORDS

Keep citizenship, professional registration and U.S. status separate

USAvisa field guide · 2 minute readReviewed 7 September 2026
THE SHORT ANSWER

Canadian permanent residence and professional registration describe different aspects of an applicant's circumstances. Neither should be treated as proof of Canadian citizenship for a TN case.

01

Identify current citizenship

Use passports and other appropriate records to describe the citizenship actually held. Mark any pending Canadian citizenship process as pending. A professional licence issued in Canada does not change that distinction. TN principal eligibility requires Canadian or Mexican citizenship; Canadian permanent residence is not a substitute.

02

Describe qualifications accurately

Supply the credentials relevant to the proposed profession without assuming they answer the immigration category question. Where degree evaluation is required, identify the institution and applicable process. A person may be well qualified professionally while a particular immigration route remains unavailable.

03

Assess the opportunity using the real combination

Bring the job or business proposal with the actual identity and qualification records. Other possible routes require their own assessment; do not promise an alternative merely because one category does not fit.
