THE SHORT ANSWER

A Strathroy-Caradoc family considering funding either an EB-5 investment or a Gold Card gift from farm or business-sale proceeds is choosing between two different legal and financial commitments, not two prices for the same result. Compare the job-creation and commercial-risk evidence EB-5 requires against the gift, fee, and eligibility terms the official Gold Card FAQ describes, using the family's actual net sale proceeds in each calculation.

01

Match each route's actual requirement to the family's real assets

Hypothetical example: a family's farm sale proceeds could fund either an EB-5 investment in a specific business or a Gold Card gift for one or more family members. Calculate the true net proceeds available after sale costs and taxes, then compare that figure against the full cost of each route — including every included family member for Gold Card, and the actual project's capital requirement for EB-5. For EB-5, use the petition-date minimum: currently US$1,050,000 or US$800,000 for a qualifying targeted employment area or infrastructure investment, with statutory adjustments from January 1, 2027. Assess at-risk capital, management or policy participation and ten qualifying full-time jobs per investor under the applicable method; eligible derivatives do not need separate principal investments.

02

Weigh commercial risk against the gift's own conditions

An EB-5 investment carries genuine commercial risk and requires evidence the project will create qualifying jobs; a Gold Card gift does not promise any financial return and instead depends on eligibility, admissibility, and visa availability. Neither is inherently safer — they simply carry different kinds of risk that the family should weigh with independent advice.

03

Confirm current terms for whichever path is chosen

Both the EB-5 capital thresholds and the Gold Card fee and gift figures are current as of the dates checked in this pack and could change. Before committing farm or business-sale proceeds to either route, recheck the official current instructions and get independent financial and tax advice specific to the family's own situation. For EB-5, conditional residence begins at immigrant-visa admission or adjustment approval. I-829 is generally filed within the 90 days before its second anniversary; filing does not itself remove conditions. For Gold Card, follow the official gift instructions after successful vetting and assess EB-1 or EB-2 eligibility, admissibility and visa availability; neither payment nor a project report grants residence.
