Is a credential evaluation the same as health-care-worker certification?

THE DIRECT ANSWER

No. Determine the purpose of the actual document. Federal health-care certification, a general credential evaluation and a professional licence address different questions and should not be treated as interchangeable.

Read the service name before ordering it

Check the approved issuing organization and the process the document is meant to support. VisaScreen is one recognized service name, but follow current official provider and certification rules rather than assuming a brand is the only possible route. Ask the reviewer whether an existing report satisfies the specific requirement instead of buying another report based on a similar title.

Map the purpose, issuer, recipient, and validity of each item. An evaluation interprets education; health-care-worker certification meets a separate federal requirement; licensing concerns practice authority. Confirm whether the offered work is a profession in Appendix 2 to Annex 16-A of the USMCA and whether the applicant meets that profession’s particular minimum credential. TN also requires Canadian or Mexican citizenship, not Canadian permanent residence, plus prearranged professional activity supported by an employer letter or contract. Avoid the common mistake of ordering another similarly named report before an approved certification provider or reviewer identifies what is actually missing.

Hypothetical example: A London perioperative nurse, educated in the Philippines and now a Canadian citizen, has an academic equivalency report prepared for provincial registration. A U.S. surgical employer requests proof for TN and the health-care occupation rules. The nurse inventories the evaluation, degree records, Canadian passport, nursing registration, proposed contract, and any certification correspondence. Comparison reveals whether the report supports a credential question while health-care-worker certification proceeds through an authorized route.
